To
The
Internet
We are pleased to offer our patrons this new service through the
generous support of the Maine State Library, the Maine
Telecommunications Education Access Fund, the Maine School and Library
Network and Metrocast Cablevision. “WIW”
provides
the
library
with
one laptop for patron use plus wireless
access for personal laptops and PDAs.
To use the connection
you will need :
- A
wireless network interface card, wireless laptop or PDA using the 802.11b protocol.
- The ability to configure your laptop to use the
library’s connection.
- No special encryption settings, user names or
passwords are required.
- Patrons using our laptop will be
required to sign in and adhere to Springvale Library’s Internet Policy.
- Patrons borrowing the laptop must leave their
driver’s license at the front desk.
Security
Wireless networks by their nature are
not fully secure. Do not enter personal passwords,
credit card numbers or other confidential information unless you are
certain that you are dealing with an encrypted site.
Use of this wireless connection is entirely at the
risk of the user and the library disclaims all and any liability for
loss of confidential information or damages. Please
note
that
due
to
limited
insurance and liability, the staff is unable
to assist you with your personal laptop or PDA.
Acceptable Use Policy
This service shall not be used to
disrupt the local area network within this library, the wide area
network or other users of this wireless service. You
agree
to
comply
with
all
laws while using this service and you agree
not to transmit any materials that would violate any laws, court orders
or regulations and/or be offensive to the recipient. You
are
responsible
for
any
and
all content transmitted through our
wireless connection.
Library Liability
Springvale Public Library will not be
liable to you or any person or persons for any direct, indirect,
incidental, special, punitive or consequential damages of any character
that arise from use of this wireless network. This
library regarding the wireless services provided makes no express
warranty. The library disclaims any implied
warranty, including warranties of merchantability or fitness for a
particular purpose.

Wireless Card Settings
- Most new laptops and PDAs come with a
built-in wireless adapter. Your computer will
automatically detect SPLs Internet Connection as soon as you turn it on
inside the library.
- If your laptop does not have wireless
capability, you will need to purchase a wireless card and install it on
your laptop before you can use our connection.
- Wireless printing is not available via this
service. If you need to print, please save your
data to a disk or e-mail it to yourself, then log on to a library
workstation and send your print jobs to the printer.
- Please note that due to limited insurance and
liability, the staff is unable to assist you with your personal laptop
or PDA.

WINDOWS 98 NETWORK SETTINGS:
- From
Control Panel, select Network.
- Locate
the
TCP/IP
protocol
and
get
into its properties. If
there is more than one TCP/IP protocol listed, look for the one
associated with your wireless adapter.
- For
IP address, select “Obtain an IP address automatically.”
- For
DNS, select “Disable DNS.”
- For
WINS, select “Use DHCP for WINS Resolution.”
WINDOWS 2000 & XP NETWORK
SETTINGS:
- From
Control Panel, select “Network and Dial-up Connections” or “Network and
Internet Connections.”
- Right-click
on
“Wireless
Network
Connection”
or
“Local Area Connection” and click
Properties.
- Locate
the
Internet
TCP/IP
protocol
and
get into its Properties. If
more
than one TCP/IP protocol is listed, look for the one associated
with your wireless adapter.
- Select
“Obtain
an
IP
address
automatically”
and “Obtain DNS server address
automatically.”
- For
XP, right click on “Wireless Network Connection” and select “View
Available Wireless Networks.” Select the name of
the wireless network available at the library and click “Connect.”
MACINTOSH NETWORK SETTINGS (OS 8,
9):
- Select Apple
Menu>Control Panel>TCP/IP.
- Connect via “Airport”
or other wireless (WiFi) Ethernet.
- Configure “Using DHCP
Server.”
- Leave Name Server and
Additional Search domains blank.
NETWORK SETTINGS (OS X):
- Select
Apple
Menu>System
Preferences>Network
Button.
- Select
TCP/IP
tab
and
configure
“Using
DHCP.”
- Above
the
TCP/IP
tab,
you
may
need to configure via “Airport” or other
wireless (WiFi) Ethernet.
- Leave
Domain
Name
Servers
and
Search
Domains blank.
INTERNET EXPLORER TIPS:
- If
you also have a dial-up connection, it should not be set to “Always
dial my default connection.”
- LAN
Settings should be “Automatically detect settings” and leave the Proxy
server settings blank.
- From
Control Panel, select Internet Options>Connections tab.
